Kharanaq

Kharanaq

Kharanaq, meaning "birthplace of the sun", is a village that shines with the plurality of its tourist sites and the beautiful panoramic view it offers. It is located 85 kilometers north of the city of Yazd. Visitors flock to it to discover its wonders. The hamlet has two parts. The oldest, built of mud brick, has one of the largest sets of adobe dwellings in Iran. Some buildings are supposed to be over a thousand years old! It is a site occupied for more than 4000 years.

It is very beautiful, and its construction dates back to the 17th century. When you have the opportunity to tread the ground of this village, ask to necessarily explore this minaret, an exceptional belfry that vibrates when you climb to reach its summit. The Kharanaq minaret rises to a height of 15 meters and consists of three floors. Its upper part displays a wooden structure.

Fascinating, it dates from the time of the Qadjar dynasty, and is located in the village of Kharanaq. The caravanserai is a building that accommodated merchants and pilgrims along the roads and in the cities at the time. It is also a place of exchange frequented by many foreigners. Erected by order of Mohammad Vali Mriza, it bears the name of Shahzadeh. It is a magnificent construction. The building was erected with old materials and admirable techniques.

Two equally interesting sites are the old bridge and the aqueduct. You will see them in the valley of the old village. You will admire this aqueduct still in use. It is quite complex and fascinating. The bridge, meanwhile, is not lacking in charm. It is tall and narrow. You can cross it safely. For your pleasure or as a hike, you will go to and from the bridge while contemplating the magnificent landscape that surrounds it.

This village allows you to admire a real castle. You will discover the oldest of the five sun-dried brick citadel towers. You will observe an old dilapidated hammam, a small mosque on two floors, the one at the bottom of which is for men, while the one at the top welcomes women. You will appreciate its oscillating minaret. You will admire a fascinating labyrinth of small alleys, tunnels and passages that offer an impressive view of the surrounding landscape.
