Morning drive to visit Nissa fortress – the Sanctuary of Parthian Kings. UNESCO declared the fortress a World Heritage Site in 2007. Nissa is described as one of the first capitals of the Parthians. It was founded by Arsaces I (reigned c. 250 BC – 211 BC) and is reputedly the royal necropolis of the Parthian Kings. However, it has neither been established that the fortress at Nissa was a royal residence nor a mausoleum. The ruins of the ancient settlement of Nissa are located 18 km from Ashgabat at Bagyr village. Drive to visit Turkmenbashy Ruhy Mosque in Kipchak (the largest mosque in Central Asia).
Then you will have an Ashgabat city tour. You will see the Wedding Palace, the modern “Yildyz” Hotel, the Ferris Wheel, the Constitution Monument, the Arch of Neutrality, the Monument and Park of Independence, the Ertogrul Gazi Mosque, the Ashgabat Olympic Stadium, and the Halk Hakydasy Memorial Complex. Breakfast at the hotel. Drive to Gokdepe fortress (50km, 50min) that was attacked in December 1880 by the Russian Empire Army. The siege of Gokdepe lasted 23 days, after which the city was taken by storm. Visit Geokdepe Mosque (Saparmyrat Hajy), which was built in 1995 to commemorate the defeat, and is noted for its mint-turquoise blue-colored roof and white marble structure.
Then, drive to visit the Horse Farm to see the national pride of Turkmen people – Akhalteke horses, the nicest horses in the world. Five thousand years ago, Turkmens began to breed Akhalteke horses. The World’s unique breed was never mixed with other breeds. Such illustrious Emperors like Alexander the Great and Darius I desired to own Ahalteke horses. There are over 35 beautiful horses on the farm. Per superstition, every sick person who touches an Ahalteke horse will get well soon.
In the afternoon, drive to the Kowata underground lake, which is located 107 km from Ashgabat. The Kow-Ata means “father of caves”. This underground area seems like a magnificent auditorium: the overall length of the cave is 230 m, its height reaches 20 m, and its width is at some points 57 m. The bottom of the cave is covered with lumps of dissolved limestone (stalagmites), and its warm and gushing water is clear and emerald-coloured. The water has a constant temperature of 33-37°C. (You should swim in the lake).
Then, drive to Nokhur mountain village (72km, 1h). The village itself fills a small depression valley in the mountains of the Kopet Dag Range. Apart from the main street through the middle of the town, the streets are so narrow that they can only just fit a car between the high stone retaining walls on each side. The Nohkuri people who populate this remote mountain village are quite different from other Turkmen tribes. According to legends, this was the place where Noah’s Ark was moored, and all animals were let out, and various seeds were planted. Indeed, the nature of Nokhur differs from the surrounding places. Visit the great tree and one of the unique cemeteries, which is isolated. Nearly every grave is marked by a wooden post decorated with the horns of a mountain goat. Make your sacred wishes by visiting a wish tree named after Kyz Bibi. Overnight at the family house

Breakfast at the family house. Then, drive to Garrygala (Karakala 99km, 4h) through Sumbar Valley, visiting the Kopetdag villages. Additionally, you will cross the Syunt-Khasardag nature reserve, which includes ecosystems of the Western Kopetdag Mountains (dry subtropics) and neighbouring plains. Here, 37 species of mammals and 217 species of birds are found. Flora of the Western Kopetdag includes 1,266 species of higher plants, which belong to 233 genera and 500 families; among these, 150 species are endemic. The nature reserve incorporates one mountain natural preserve, the Syunt-Khasardag (established in 1990). Overnight at the guest house.

Breakfast at the guest house. In the morning, drive to Dehistan (297km, 8h). On the way to Dehistan, you will experience the Moon's surface on Earth with outstanding landscapes. Lunch on-site. Then, drive to Dehistan, which boasts of its picturesque towers of ancient settlements and 10th-12th century monuments, as well as the most ancient mosque from the early Islamic period that stands on the ancient entombment of Mashad. This city is probably the most remote and isolated. Once, it used to be a prosperous medieval city standing on caravan routes between Khoresm and Persian Hyrcania. Overnight camp near Dehistan

After breakfast, drive to Yangykala Canyons (356km, 6h), one of the scenic natural objects of Turkmenistan. The word expression “Yangy kala” translates from Turkmen as “fire fortress.” Indeed, the sheer cliffs of white, yellow, ocher, purple, and red colours, fancily carved by winds and rains, are very similar to the stone castles from a fantasy. Picnic-style breakfast at the canyon. Drive to Turkmenbashi (181km, 3h). On the way to Turkmenbashi, you will visit the Gozli Ata pilgrimage site. Embark on a captivating city tour of Turkmenbashi, the vibrant Caspian Sea port city formerly known as Krasnovodsk. Immerse yourself in the city's rich history, vibrant culture, and stunning natural beauty. Venture into the Old Town, where charming Soviet-era architecture blends seamlessly with traditional Turkmen architecture. Explore the lively bazaars, where you can find an abundance of fresh produce, local handicrafts, and spices.

Transfer to Turkmenbashi International Airport for a flight to Ashgabat. Upon arrival at Ashgabat International Airport, meet your driver. Then, drive to Mary (389km, 4h). You also see the ruins of the Seyitjemalledin mosque in Anau. The mosque was built in 1456 when Abu-ibn-Kasim Baber Bahadurkhan ruled in Khorasan (1446-1457). Construction of the mosque was financed by Bahadurkhan’s vizier, Muhammad Hudaidot, who also selected a site of construction near the grave of his father, Sheikh Jemaleddin, a native of Anau. The square central hall (with sides of 10.5 meters) was crowned with a dome. In later periods, the Seyit-Jemaleddin mosque was partially reconstructed. By the nineteenth century, the subsidence of land had already damaged the building heavily, and during the 1948 Ashgabat earthquake, it was destroyed completely. Now, only the lower parts of the portal and some fragments of the walls are extant.
On the way, visit Abiwerd, which was once an important trading town of North Khorasan. It was a key link on the Great Silk Road between Nisa and Merv and also enjoyed ties in Nishapur, across the Kopetdag Mountains to the south.
Then you will see all the major buildings of Mary downtown. Also, visit Mary Bazaar to see a variety of local products. And the Russian Orthodox church (the oldest in Turkmenistan). Overnight in Mary

BF at the hotel. Drive to Gonurdepe (105km, 3h). Gonurdepe was the capital of the Margush (Margiana) country, occupied an area of more than 3000 sq. km, and consisted of 78 oases and more than 150 compact settlements. The American newspaper “Boston Globe” wrote that before we knew the four oldest centers of the world’s civilization: Egypt, India, China, and Mesopotamia, and now, due to the fantastic results of the Margiana expedition, it is quite possible to think that there was another, the fifth center.
Then, drive to Merv (82km, 2h) to explore ancient Merv – “Queen of the world” was one of the most important capitals of Islam, along with Baghdad, Cairo, and Damascus. Sightseeing of ancient Merv includes Greater Kyz Gala & Lesser Kyz Gala (VI-VII), Complex of Askhabs (VIII-XIV), Erk Gala (VI BC), Gyaur Gala (IV BC), Hoja Yusup Hamadani complex, Sultan Sanjar mausoleum, Muhamed Ibn Zeid mausoleum. The area is rich in natural gas. Burning for over 50 years, Darvaza Gas Crater shines like a pearl in the Karakum desert. Besides the Darvaza Gas Crater, you will also see water and mud craters. You will get to see both the old and new parts of the city and experience all the highlights it has to offer

Sightseeing tour in Kunya Urgench: visit the Portal of Caravansaray, Mamun Minaret, II Arslan Mausoleum, Sultan Tekesh Mausoleum, Academy of Horezm, Kutlug Timur Minaret, and Turabek Hanum Mausoleum. Breakfast at the hotel. Morning drive to visit “Altyn Asyr” Oriental Bazar (opens on Wed, Thurs, Sat, Sun) – Jygyldyk, located 20km to the north of Ashgabat. It is one of the largest open bazaars in the world, filled with colourful rugs, jewellery, carpets, silk, national Turkmen costumes, and animals in another part.
Then, visit Gulistan Bazaar, which is one of the largest and oldest covered markets and a must-visit for any traveller to Ashgabat. The ground floor of the bazaar is dedicated to fresh produce, such as fruits, vegetables, meat, fish, and dairy products. Stalls also sell spices, nuts, dried fruits, and other food items. The second floor of the bazaar is home to a variety of shops selling clothing and souvenirs.
Then, visit the National Museum of History & Ethnography. The museum has a rich collection of ancient artefacts from Turkmenistan. More than 500,000 exhibits are displayed here. It has nine halls, each dedicated to a certain period or theme. The museum reveals the variety of Turkmenistan’s landscape, its flora and fauna, fossils, and rare geological finds. The Hall of Independence illustrates the modern development of the country. The Hall of Ancient History presents a collection of flint tools from the Mesolithic era (50,000 years B.C.), used by primitive people in Western Turkmenistan, along with Neolithic ceramics and ornaments from the first human settlements along the northern slopes of Kopet-Dag.
Drive to visit the Carpet Museum, one of the best in Central Asia, featuring designs from the Tekke, Yamud, Sarik, and Chodor tribes. The Turkmen Carpet Museum is one of the cultural centres of Turkmenistan, where about 2000 carpet exhibits, including rare ones, are exhibited. For example, the museum has the smallest carpet to wear keys and the world’s largest hand carpet with a total area of 301 m², which was woven in 2001, and in 2003, it was added to the Guinness Book of Records.
